HOW TO FIND YOUR TYRE SIZE
WIDTH
The first three digits. This indicates the width of the tyre in millimetres. For example, a tyre marked 225 will measure 225mm across the tread from sidewall to sidewall.
PROFILE
The fourth and fifth digits in the tyre code, following the tyre width, represent the aspect ratio or profile height of the tyre sidewall. This is expressed as a percentage of the tyre’s width. For example, an aspect ratio of 55 means the profile height of the tyre is 55% of its width.
RIM SIZE
The next two digits indicate the size of the wheel rim the tyre is designed to fit. This number also represents the diameter of the tyre from bead to bead. For example, a tyre marked 16 will fit a 16-inch wheel rim.
WHAT DO I BRING ON THE DAY?
Please remember to bring your locking wheel nut key with you to your appointment. If your car has locking wheel nuts, we’ll need the key to remove the wheels. The locking wheel nut key is typically stored in the glove box or under the boot liner, alongside the spare tyre.
TYRE PRESSURE MONITORING SYSTEMS
Each tyre is equipped with a sensor valve that monitors tyre pressure and alerts the driver to any low pressure or imbalances through the dashboard display. TPMS (Tyre Pressure Monitoring System) sensors trigger a warning light when there is a drop of 6-7 PSI. While this is now a legal requirement, some manufacturers set their sensors to activate the warning light for even smaller decreases, offering extra peace of mind.
For vehicles first used on or after January 1, 2012, a faulty or malfunctioning tyre pressure monitoring system (TPMS) will result in an MOT failure.
Wheel Balancing
Wheel balancing ensures that the weight of the wheel is evenly distributed as it turns. Whenever a new tyre is mounted, the wheel should be rebalanced to maintain smooth rotation. If the wheels are unbalanced or out of balance, they can cause vibrations that make driving uncomfortable and lead to premature wear of tyres, suspension, and steering components.
At Brentwood Rd Vehicle Repairs, wheel balancing is included with all tyre purchases.
What is the legal tyre limit?
The minimum legal tyre tread depth is 1.6mm. Driving with tyres worn below this depth is illegal and could result in a fine of up to £2,500 and three points on your driving license, so it’s important to check regularly. Even if your tyres are just above this limit, safety could still be compromised. If you’re concerned about your tyre tread depth or overall safety, feel free to consult the team at Brentwood Rd Vehicle Repairs.
